Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a clinical syndrome characterized by hyperglycaemia (increased sugar level in blood) due to absolute or relative deficiency of insulin (insulin is a hormone secreted by pancreas).
Diabetes mellitus can be primary or secondary.
• Primary diabetes mellitus can be insulin dependent (IDDM) or non-insulin dependent (NIIDM).
• Secondary diabetes mellitus arises due to some other disease which causes the development of diabetes mellitus. It can be due to
• Pancreatic disease
• Hormonal imbalance.
• Drug induced etc.
Diagnostic criteria for diabetes mellitus
• Weakness
• Polyuria (excessive urination), polyphagia (excessive hunger), polydipsia(excessive thirst), weight loss or weight gain.
• Non healing wounds.
• Pulmonary tuberculosis
• Recurrent styes, recurrent UTI (urinary tract infections)
• Blood sugar level (fasting overnight) > 126 mg/dl on at least two separate occasions.
• Post prandial blood sugar level: > 140 mg/dl.
• Normal blood glucose level: 70-110 mg%
• Random blood glucose level: > 200 mg/dl.
